The state Charter School Commission has awarded a five-year renewal to the Cherokee Charter Academy and will let the school accept students from Cobb, Pickens and Bartow counties in addition to Cherokee County beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

School officials said they had high standings in financing and operations and performed higher academically than the average of the four counties they will now serve.

The school, a K-8 facility in Canton, places strong emphasis on a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum at all grade levels, officials said. Students have personalized learning plans that allow for differentiated teaching, based on their individual academic goals.

"This five-year renewal shows that the state Charter School Commission of Georgia is confident in our ability to serve students consistently well and that we provide a viable option for parents," said April Wallis, Cherokee Charter principal. Information: www.CherokeeCharter.org
