With its balconies overlooking a picturesque horse riding ring and elegant ballroom, the Chastain Horse Park Clubhouse is an ideal spot for wedding receptions and other events.
But many events will have to be canceled for several weeks while the three-story building is restored. That's because the building's sprinkler system apparently malfunctioned Saturday night, dumping water throughout the building.
"It's been gutted," said Mandy Branton, executive director for the horse-related services at the park.
The building's alarm sounded late Saturday night, and an on-site staff member that tends to the horses called firefighters, who shut off the sprinklers, Branton said. Employees worked during the night to salvage what they could, she said.
It likely will be mid-August before the facility is ready to be used again, and that will amount to sad brides, and a loss of revenue, Branton said.
"One of our brides was in tears," Branton said. "It's really sad when it's a once-in-a-lifetime type event."
The flooding will not affect outdoor horse activities, such as therapeutic programs and summer camps, Branton said. In 1999, riding programs began in a newly constructed riding ring. The clubhouse opened in 2000.
