Southern Regional Health System's board of directors on Monday named Stephen W. Mahan as the new CEO.

Mahan, who has worked in the hospital industry for 32 years, will succeed Clint Matthews, who served for 18 months under a management contract with the Riverdale hospital.

"We are very pleased to be able to attract a hospital executive of Stephen Mahan's proven abilities," board chairman Ron Dodson said in a statement. "Over the past three decades, he has built a very impressive track record as a highly capable manager and leader."

Mahan leaves a role as CEO of the Muskogee Regional Medical Center in Muskogee, Okla. Prior to that, he served in leadership roles at the Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma, Ala.; the Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla.; Memorial Hospital of Tampa/Town and Country Hospital in Tampa; and Doctor's Hospital of Sarasota, Fla.
