More than 2,500 South Georgia customers have been without natural gas since Wednesday following an unexplained outage, according to the service provider.

Residents in Mount Vernon, Ailey, Vidalia, Lyons, Soperton, Swainsboro and Twin City have been affected, Atlanta Gas Light spokeswoman Kristie Swink Benson said. Repairs are underway but no timetable has been given as to when service will be fully restored.

Benson said crews are visiting customers to ensure that all gas appliances are turned off. Once the repairs are complete AGL personnel will return to the homes to re-light any necessary appliances.

Benson said the cause of the outage is still under investigation.
