A soldier from west Georgia was killed this week in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Army Pfc. Brice M. Scott, 22, of Columbus, died Sunday in Kandahar province from injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.

Scott was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Division, based at Fort Riley, Kan.

Sgt. Nathaniel Smith of Fort Riley's public affairs office says that Scott entered the Army through a processing station in Atlanta. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that he graduated from North Eugene High School in Oregon.

Scott is survived by his wife and one child.
