Gwinnett County firefighters are investigating the cause of a Snellville church fire.

Smoke was reported coming from the Shellville United Methodist Church at 2428 East Main Street around 3:30 p.m., Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said.

No injuries were reported.

The brunt of the fire struck at the rear of the old church,a more-than 60-year-old building adjacent to the main sanctuary that now is used as an auxiliary chapel, Rutledge said.

The fire gutted the kitchen in the basement of the building, causing only smoke damage to the small sanctuary and offices on the main level, Rutledge said.

The fire caussed heavy damage to the kitchen and sent smoke throughout the building, fire officials said.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames for the fire, which was called in around 3:30 p.m.  and are currently ventilating the smoke, officials said.

It is unclear how the fire started, and officials are unable to determine the extent of the damage, Rutledge said.
