Looks like you'll be able to put the umbrella away a lot sooner this week.
While there is a 30 percent chance of showers Wednesday and a 50 percent chance on Thursday, the risk of rain diminishes to 40 percent Friday morning, with a return of partly sunny skies Friday afternoon and full sun Saturday.
Highs for the remainder of the week will be in the low 80s, and nights will see temperatures drop from the mid-60s to upper 50s by Sunday.
Because of a cool, stable atmosphere, showers moving across Georgia from Alabama on Tuesday never posed a big threat to metro Atlanta, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton.
The rainfall Tuesday and Wednesday also isn't expected to have much if any impact on the current drought in metro Atlanta and the rest of the state.
Brian McCallum, assistant director of the U.S. Geological Survey, said metro Atlanta and elsewhere, except in the upper northwest, remain under severe to extreme drought conditions.
“Things are still very dry across the state,” McCallum said. A half-inch of rain or less was expected from potential rain amounts between Tuesday and Thursday.
“That’s really only going to get the soil wet again,” McCallum said. “It’s really not going to create much of a runoff. So the impact on the drought will be pretty minimal.”
A few light showers dampened the northern suburbs in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, while on the southside, there was heavier rain, along with a few thunderstorms. Peachtree City recorded about a half-inch of overnight rain.
For allergy sufferers, the air quality was rated “good” on Tuesday, meaning it was safe for outdoor physical activity without health concerns.
