Fayette County officials said Monday that funeral arrangements have been made for Pota Coston, a county commissioner who passed away Friday after battling cancer for several months.
Coston's wake will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church North in Fayetteville, according to Fayette County manager Steven Rapson. The venue for Coston's wake, which was originally scheduled to be held at Willie Watkins Funeral Home in Riverdale, changed Tuesday.
Coston will lie in state from 9 a.m. until her 11 a.m. burial Saturday at Hopeful Primitive Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
Although space is limited, Rapson said the public is invited to attend each event, as well as the Celebration of Life, which will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta.
A prayer vigil was held for Coston, 57, on Thursday after she was admitted to hospice on Tuesday. She died Friday after struggling with breast cancer since January, the same month she was sworn in as Fayette's District 5 commissioner. She was the first black commissioner in Fayette County.
“Pota died after a long struggle with cancer,” Rapson said in an email. “Each of us not only grieves at the passing of a tremendous person but also for the loss her family suffers. Pota was a class act and helped bring a sense of harmony and inclusiveness to all residents of Fayette County.”
