A counselor at Nickajack Elementary School in Smyrna has been named the national school counselor of the year.

Nicole Pfleger learned of her selection last week. The award is sponsored by the American School Counselor Association. It is the highest national honor for professional school counselors, according to Cobb school officials.

Pfleger will visit Washington, D.C. Feb. 1 -- 3 to kick off National School Counseling Week. The counselor association will meet with members of Congress and attend a black-tie awards gala at Union Station.
