Scattered thunderstorms could persist through the weekend, delaying road construction projects that, if weather permits, will close lanes on several metro interstates.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said the chance of storms across metro Atlanta is 40 percent on Saturday and 30 percent Sunday.

Some of the storms could contain damaging lightning, strong winds and heavy rain.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, one of those storms had popped up over Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and was causing flight delays of 15 to 30 minutes.

Weekend highs in the low 90s will feel almost cool compared to what's expected early next week. Forecasters are predicting that temperatures will climb into the upper 90s on Tuesday. The hottest temperature recorded so far this year at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was 96 on June 1.

If the weekend rain holds off, motorists can expect delays from numerous road construction lane closures.

In DeKalb County, the state Department of Transportation plans to shut down the three right lanes of I-285 eastbound from Ashford Dunwoody Road to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, along with the ramp from North Peachtree Road to I-285 eastbound, from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

The three left lanes of I-285 westbound will also be closed from Buford Highway to New Peachtree Road.

Motorists on I-20 in DeKalb will find the entrance ramp from Panola Road to I-20 eastbound closed for paving between 9 pm. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday.

In Clayton County, the two left lanes of I-75 southbound from Old Dixie Highway to Mt. Zion Boulevard will be closed from 9 a.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Saturday.

North of there in Fulton County, the I-75 northbound ramps to and from Cleveland Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, and the three right lanes of I-75 northbound will be closed from south of Cleveland Avenue to University Avenue. The ramp from I-75 northbound to Langford Parkway will also be closed through the weekend for resurfacing.

If your weekend plans include traveling on Ga. 400 early Sunday, be aware that all southbound lanes will be closed from Holcomb Bridge Road to Northridge Road between 6 and 7 a.m. for a bicycle race.
