Sandy Springs just made home improvement a little easier

Sandy Springs homeowners, rejoice: Home improvement just got more efficient.

The city's building permit department has sped up the review process for small, residential projects such as "small room and kitchen additions, decks and sheds," a news release said.

Permits that previously had a five-day turnaround could now be issued the same, or next, day — if the building plans meet the necessary requirements, of course.

An online permit management system, which allows builders to manage and track the status of inspections and enables the public to query projects by permit type, date, address, permit number or project name, was implemented earlier this year.

"We’ve worked to streamline the process to help reduce development costs and bring more certainty and predictability to permit reviews in addition to lowering the potential cost to the homeowner," said Sandy Springs Assistant City Manager Jim Tolbert in the release.

While the permit review time is speeding up for homeowners, it is slowing down by several days for major commercial and new residential developments, including projects within the Chattahoochee River Corridor.

"Urban redevelopment construction and projects within the river corridor are more complex and can significantly impact the City’s transportation system, environment and stormwater infrastructure. We’ve adjusted our review periods to reflect the time needed to thoroughly review these requests," said Tolbert.
