Roswell sets millage rate hearings

Roswell has scheduled public hearings in the coming weeks for a millage rate that will remain 5.455 mills, unchanged for the last eight years.
The hearings are set for 7 p.m. May 22, 6:30 p.m. May 31, and 7 p.m. June 12 at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill St. The proposed millage rate includes 5.205 mills for maintenance and operations and 0.250 mills for debt service, and will require an increase in property taxes by 3.93 percent.
Also, the City Council’s first and second readings on the proposed fiscal 2018 budget will take place at the May 22 and June 12 meetings. The document, presented to the City Council envisions $140.3 million in spending and $144.7 million in revenues.
A revenue bump of $16 million will come from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax approved by residents last November. Of that amount, $11 million will go toward design and right-of-way costs for the Big Creek Parkway project. The budget also provides for $1.6 million to replace fire department vehicles, $751,360 to pay for an increase in fire station staffing from 28 to 34 fire personnel per shift, and $150,000 to acquire body-worn cameras for police officers.
