Ex-Rockdale High QB accused of rape

A former Rockdale County High quarterback has been arrested on sexual assault charges, DeKalb County police said Friday.

Zacharie Zamir Powell, 17, is charged with rape, aggravated sodomy and kidnapping, police said. Information about the alleged attack was not immediately available.

According to police records, Powell was arrested Aug. 12 in connection with another incident involving a male who grabbed and frightened a woman walking in a DeKalb apartment complex near Glendale Road and Hatton Drive.

The male showed the woman a gun and told her to "walk with me," police said. The woman cried out for police, and the alleged assailant left in a dark four-door car.

About two hours later, police saw the car the woman described at an apartment complex, and they confronted Powell as he was entering the vehicle.

Powell disclosed to officers that there was a BB gun in the vehicle, and he was arrested, police said.

As officers took Powell into custody, police dispatchers relayed information about a rape suspect matching Powell's description, police said.

Powell was a quarterback for Rockdale's football team last year, but school officials told Channel 2 Action News that he is not enrolled in the district this year.

Charges are pending in the case of the woman Powell allegedly grabbed, police said. The teen was in DeKalb County jail Friday pending a bond hearing.
