Rexall Grill in Duluth is reopening Tuesday more than a month after it was forced to shut down when the operator failed to pay state sales taxes.

The landmark restaurant on Buford Highway will begin serving at 5:30 a.m., with mostly the same menu and wait staff but with a fresh coat of paint and a new management team, property owner Lynda Alley said.

"We've spent $69,000 getting it ready," Alley said Monday. "It looks good. It looks really good."

On June 23, the Georgia Department of Revenue shuttered the popular eatery, later revealing that restaurant operator Gail Herrin owed $500,336.60 in sales taxes and penalties.

Herrin, who had run the diner since 1982, was expected to return as a restaurant manager. Last week, she told Alley that she had decided against coming back.

"She felt like it wasn't good for us or for her," Alley said. "But we're still on good terms."

Herrin has not returned phone calls from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A grand reopening of Rexall Grill is tentatively scheduled for Saturday.
