MERRIFIELD, Va. -- A student at the Savannah College of Art and Design was found dead after a car crash in Virginia, and her death is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said.

Fairfax County police on Monday identified the woman as Vanessa Pham, 19, of Falls Church, Va., who had just finished her freshman year at the SCAD campus in Savannah. Authorities confirmed she was dead before the crash Sunday afternoon.

Officials responding to the crash on Route 50 in Falls Church found Pham inside a 2008 Toyota. Officials said injuries on her upper body weren't consistent with the impact of the crash. Police said the car had been driven into a ditch. The Washington Post reported that Pham had been stabbed.

Pham, an only child, lived with her mother and other relatives in an apartment in Falls Church, the Post reported. She went to visit friends Sunday afternoon, said her mother, Julie Pham. But her friends weren't home, and her family and police aren't sure what happened after that.

"She's very talented," her mother told the Post.  "She wanted to be a fashion designer. She wanted to go everywhere -- Paris, New York. She wanted to work in New York or California."

A Facebook page has been set up for the Vanessa Pham Memorial Fund. As of early Tuesday evening, it had more than 1,200 members.
