Remembering Georgia's fallen on Memorial Day

They hailed from Georgia's cities, suburbs and small towns, all serving our country in a time of war. In the past year, each made the ultimate sacrifice.

Since last Memorial Day, these Georgians lost their lives while serving overseas. Here, we remember them.

-- First Lt. Jonathan P. Walsh, 28, was killed April 22 in Afghanistan when a truck in which he was riding hit an improvised explosive device. Walsh, a native of Kennesaw and graduate of Kennesaw State University, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 504th Infantry of the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

-- Spc. Jonathan F. Davis, 20, of Griffin died March 29 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, after an insurgent attack. Davis was a cavalry scout with the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment in the 82nd’s 4th Brigade Combat Team.

-- Air Force Capt. Nicholas S. Whitlock, 29, of Newnan died Feb. 18 in an aircraft accident near Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Africa. A member of the 34th Special Operations Squadron, Whitlock was one of four killed.

-- Petty Officer First Class Paris S. Pough, 40, a U.S. Navy maintenance technician assigned to the USS Carl Vinson, died Feb. 17 in a noncombat port visit to Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates. Pough was from Columbus.

-- Marine Lance Cpl. Scott Daniel "Boots" Harper, 21, died Oct. 13 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, during combat operations. The Douglas County resident was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

-- Spc. Adrian G. Mills, 23, of Newnan died Sept. 29 in Kirkuk, Iraq, when his unit was attacked by insurgents. Mills was assigned to the 272nd Military Police Company, 519th Military Police Battalion at Fort Polk, La.

-- Lance Cpl. John R. Wimpey Cagle, 19, of Tucker died Sept. 28 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. A 2010 graduate of Chamblee Charter High School, Cagle was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

-- Staff Sgt. Keith F. Rudd, 36, of Winder died Sept. 10 in Parvan, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. A flight medic, Rudd was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

-- Spc. Mark J. Downer, 23, died Aug. 5 in Kandahar province when insurgents attacked his unit with a rocket-propelled grenade. A much-decorated soldier from Warner Robins, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.

-- Army Pfc. Brice M. Scott, 22, of Columbus died July 31 in Kandahar province from injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit. Scott was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley, Kan.

-- Spc. Robert G. Tenney Jr., 29, of Warner Robins died June 29 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit in Badrah, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.
