The remains found in the Kennesaw area Wednesday morning are those of a Calhoun man missing since August 2009, Cobb County police said Friday.

Norris Milton Dove Jr. was 47 when he was reported missing by his wife, Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb police said. Investigators have not determined how Dove died.

A man collecting cans to recycle Wednesday spotted what he believed to be a skull in the woods about 30 yards east of I-75 near the Shiloh Road overpass and called 911, Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb police told the AJC.

Officers arrived shortly after 10:15 a.m. and located additional bones in the heavily brush-filled area, Bowman said.

Dove's mother, Sylvia Dove of Buford, said the news gave her some closure on what happened to her son, who is survived by two adult children.

Norris Dove had disabilities from a traumatic head injury, his mother said, but he worked hard to overcome the adversity.

“He had had a head injury, but he always tried to let it not hold him back," Sylvia Dove told the AJC in a phone interview.

It came as a shock nearly three years ago when she couldn't contact her son, she said.

"I always heard from my son and I knew something was wrong," Dove said. "I never knew what happened."

Dove said when her son disappeared, police had little to go on. Now, she's hopeful she'll soon learn more about how her son died.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating, police said. Anyone with information that could assist investigators was asked to call Cobb police at 770-499-3945.
