Remains found in Gwinnett likely female, police say

Gwinnett County police said the skeletal remains found Monday most likely were a woman but it would be some time before investigators learn her identity.

Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli told the AJC Tuesday the medical examiner's findings would dictate the next step in the investigation.

"They will let us know," Schiralli said. "There is no indication this is Justin Gaines or Jason Roark. It's leaning towards a female but that's not confirmed.

Gaines, then 18,  disappeared Nov. 1, 2007, from Wild Bill's nightclub in Duluth. Iraq war veteran Roark, then 26, was last seen  Nov.  9, 2006, at a Snellville hotel.

A man walking his dog found the skeletal remains in a wooded area behind the 6900 block of Forest Vale Drive near Norcross.

Though no cause of death has been determined, police suspect criminal activity was involved, said officer Brian Kelly said.

Gwinnett Police homicide detectives are asking for the public's help, and a reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for any information that helps the case.

Police are encouraging anyone with incident or identity of the body to call 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
