The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and the county’s Resource Recovery Development Authority are moving to sell of the old Ball Ground Recycling Center property.

At a special meeting, the agencies approved a $3 million, 30-year, lease-to-purchase deal with Chris Cowart Properties LLC. The vote was 4-1, with Commissioner Scott Gordon opposed. The governmental bodies had accepted an initial letter of interest from the firm during an earlier meeting.

The shuttered plant, on a more than 30-acre tract has been costing the county thousands of dollars a month in loan debt service payments since the former operator of the recycling center declared bankruptcy and ceased operations in 2012.

A group of residents who oppose the Cowart deal is seeking an injunction to halt the current agreement, which they’ve labeled a “sweetheart deal.” They said their aim is to have the property sold to the highest and best bidder.
