A registered sex offender was arrested Wednesday after allegedly robbing four UGA students.

Germil Deun Johnson, 20, confronted his first victim, a 21-year-old female, Monday night as she walked down North Avenue toward her home on Berlin Street, Athens-Clarke County Police Capt. Clarence Holeman told the AJC on Thursday.

Johnson told the woman he would hurt her if she didn't give him any money. "It was robbery by intimidation," Holeman said.

She fished $11 from her pocket -- less than half the money he collected from his four alleged victims, Holeman said.

Johnson apparently tracked the students from the Multimodal Transportation Center, which sees considerable foot traffic.

Three of the robberies occurred Tuesday afternoon. In the first incident, Johnson is accused of following a 22-year-old woman to Willow Street, where he demanded she give him money, police say. She gave him $1. Johnson is then alleged to have confronted an approaching male student, who forked over $9.

He returned to the multimodal center, police say, where he tackled a 22-year-old female as she was talking on her cell phone.

"I know you got something," Johnson, convicted of statutory rape in 2009, allegedly told her. She offered to take him to her apartment on Willow Street and get him some money. Johnson said he didn't believe her, police allege, punching the student in the stomach. A passing motorist stopped to intercede, and Johnson fled on foot back toward the multimodal center, where police arrested him.

The homeless man, who has several previous drug violations,  is being held without bond, charged with two counts of robbery, aggravated assault and a probation violation.  Two more robbery charges will be filed later Thursday afternoon, Holeman said.
