Storms that popped up over parts of metro Atlanta on Saturday dumped heavy rain across the northern suburbs, and forecasters said there’s a good chance for more rain the rest of the weekend and into next week.

The heaviest rain late Saturday morning and early afternoon was in Cobb County, where Dobbins Air Reserve Base recorded 1.12 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Other rainfall totals through mid-afternoon included .50 inch in Dunwoody and .20 inch in Alpharetta. Atlanta’s official rain gauge at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, however, had not recorded any rain through late afternoon Saturday.

At 5 p.m., Weather Service radar showed more storms developing southeast of Atlanta around the Covington area and moving to the northwest toward downtown Atlanta.

The weekend rain prompted the state Department of Transportation to delay until Monday night a major repaving project that had been expected to jam the top-end Perimeter.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz put the chance of rain Saturday evening at 60 percent, diminishing slightly to 40 percent on Sunday and Monday before climbing back to 60 percent Tuesday and Wednesday.

Afternoon highs will be around 90 Sunday and Monday and in the upper 80s Tuesday and Wednesday, with overnight lows in the low 70s.
