Widespread rain moved into metro Atlanta just in time for Monday’s morning commute will be followed by much colder air rushing in later in the day.

The rain began moving in from the northwest before 6 a.m., and by 7:30, the back edge of the bulk of the rain was approaching the northwest suburbs.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said the chance of rain Monday is 90 percent. The National Weather Service said isolated thunderstorms accompanying the showers could produce winds gusting to 50 mph and heavy downpours.

Behind the rain, “really cold air” will move in, Minton said.

The Weather Service said there’s a slight chance of freezing drizzle Monday night as temperatures drop to around 30 degrees.

Minton said Tuesday will be sunny but colder, with highs only in the upper 40s.

There’s a 20 percent chance of rain Wednesday, increasing to 60 percent Thursday, Minton said.

She said highs will be in the upper 50s Wednesday and upper 40s Thursday after morning lows of 34 Wednesday and 41 Thursday.
