The Georgia Lottery, set up to assist the state's pre-K program as well as fund HOPE Scholarships, had a more direct impact on education than usual this week when it awarded a $1 million top prize in an instant game to a preschool teacher from Forsyth county.

Judy Pelham of Cumming, a mother of three adult children and grandmother of six, claimed her prize Wednesday at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Duluth.

The 56-year-old Pelham purchased her winning ticket in the Georgia Lottery Black game at the Save Money Food Mart on Hutchinson Road in Cumming, lottery officials said.

Pelham, who said she's had luck playing the lottery in the past, scratched the ticket at home with her daughter. The winning moment was "noisy," she said.

"We were screaming," Pelham said.

Pelham and her husband Carlos have not yet decided what to do with their winnings.
