Powerball jackpot nears record high

For the third time this year, the Powerball jackpot has crossed the $300 million mark.

No players matched the winning numbers announced Wednesday night, upping the cash prize from $250 million to $325 million — only $40 million short of the lottery’s all-time record, set in 2006.

That milestone could fall Saturday night, when the next Powerball drawing is scheduled.

Wednesday night’s winning numbers were 8, 18, 24, 30 and 39. The Powerball number was 26.

There are two payment options for a winning ticket — the $250 million prize paid out in 30 payments over 29 years, or the cash option, which comes to about $166 million. Powerball tickets are $2 per play.
