Police: drunk Duluth man charged with deadly crash

Police say a Duluth man was so drunk that he crashed his truck and didn’t realize his passenger was dead.

Christopher Davis, 22, is now in the Gwinnett County Detention Center, where is he being held without bond on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, felony hit and run and failure to maintain lane.

Clint Gercone, 24, of Berkeley Lake, died early Friday, Gwinnett County Police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said.

Police say Gercone was a passenger in Davis’ 1997 Nissan pickup truck.

Davis was driving on Lake Shore Drive in Duluth around 1:30 a.m. Friday when he attempted to go around a curve near Ridge Road and lost control, police said.

His pickup veered off the road, struck a mailbox and landed in a drainage ditch. During the crash, the truck overturned and landed on its wheels, police said.

Davis then drove off, not realizing his passenger was nonresponsive, police said. A few minutes later, he stopped to call 911.

Paramedics arrived and pronounced Gercone dead at the scene, police said.

Investigators determined that Davis had been drinking and arrested him, Schiralli said. The crash remains under investigation.
