Acting on a request from the Georgia Department of Transportation, police in Gainesville plan to clear a homeless camp from under a prominent bridge, according to a media report.

Reports of violence at the camp, where about a dozen people reside at any given time, have grown more frequent, the Gainesville Times reported.

The DOT owns the right of way under the Queen City Bridge, and the agency says the area has become unsafe for its workers, according to the report.

“Current conditions make maintenance inspections and repair work hazardous to GDOT’s employees due to illegal structures and waste that accumulates,” according to a DOT letter to police.
