The Hampton City Council voted unanimously at its Jan. 14 regular meeting to approve a resolution changing how planning and zoning services are provided for city residents, specifically putting them back under the city’s control and not the county’s.

The resolution also calls for the removal of Hampton’s representative on the county’s Zoning Advisory Board. The council voted at the same meeting to approve the first reading of five ordinances replacing all references to “Henry County Planning and Zoning” with “City of Hampton’s Community Development Department.” The ordinances become officials with passage of second readings, likely to be scheduled for the council’s February meeting.

The city began taking steps to assume responsibility for its planning and zoning in late 2019.
