Keeping dairy products past expiration dates and undercooking meats and poultry contributed to an unsatisfactory grade for Piedmont Hospital food services, according to state records detailing the April 12 inspection.

The hospital's cafeteria received a 68 while the dietary kitchen, from which patients are served, scored a 61. Piedmont, which requested its follow-up inspection be expedited, fared much better Wednesday, with the cafeteria rating a 95 and the kitchen, 89.

Mark Galvin, the director of Piedmont's Nutrition and Food Services, called the low scores a "distressing blemish on what has consistently been a high quality service."

"Immediately following the most recent inspection, all deficiencies identified were quickly addressed and corrected," said Galvin, adding he was "confident" the re-inspection scores would return to the hospital's previous levels.

Six other Fulton County establishments received unsatisfactory grades this month. The Happy Wok on Crabapple Road in Alpharetta scored the lowest by far -- a 29.
