Police are investigating a fatal shooting Tuesday morning at a northwest Atlanta gas station.

Investigators say the victim, a man apparently in his 50s, was shot multiple times while sitting inside his car at the gas pump.

"It would appear that the subject who did the shooting approached on foot," Atlanta Police homicide unit commander Lt. Paul Guerrucci told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police did not release the identity of the victim, but Guerrucci told reporters the car was a rental car. Police Chief George Turner arrived at the scene around mid-morning.

Witnesses reported the shooting shortly after 6:30 a.m. outside the BP at 3260 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.

Police say the man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Authorities have not identified the man, pending notification of his next of kin, who are out of state.

Investigators are canvassing the area surrounding the scene of the shooting, which is at the busy intersection of Hollowell Parkway and I-285, but no description of the shooter has been released as of yet, Guerrucci said.
