Two pedestrians were killed early Saturday in northeast Atlanta while crossing Memorial Drive, police said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victims as Danya Crumbley, 31, and William Crumbley, 33, both of Atlanta.

A police spokesman said they were crossing Memorial at Hill Street around 2 a.m. when they were struck by a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Bryan Butler. Spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport said speed, drugs and alcohol may have been contributing factors.

"The driver came and a high rate of speed eastbound on Memorial Drive," Davenport said. "The couple was hit and killed on the scene."

Davenport told Channel 2 Action News the driver lost control of his vehicle at Memorial Drive and Grant Street, where he was arrested. Butler and two passengers in the vehicle with him were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Butler was later taken to Fulton County Jail, where he is charged with two counts of hit and run, and two counts of homicide by vehicle. He is also charged with reckless driving.

Police said the couple had stopped at a BP gas station at the corner of Memorial and Hill before crossing the intersection.

In May, Butler was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery in Cook County, Ill., according to booking information.
