A 54-year-old Paulding County man was killed when his 2005 GMC Sierra ran off a road and hit a tree, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

James H. Westmoreland Jr., of Dallas, was driving the truck southbound on U.S. 45 in Madison County early Wednesday when he apparently veered into the median and struck a traffic sign, highway patrol spokeswoman Dalya Qualls told the AJC Friday.

Investigators believe Westmoreland then over-corrected; the truck left the roadway and struck a tree, Qualls said.

Westmoreland, who was wearing a seat belt, was the only person in the truck in the single-vehicle wreck. Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected of having been a factor in the accident, according to the THP.
