Norcross will become a “Purple Heart City” at the regular Mayor and Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at City Hall, 65 Lawrenceville St. A proclamation will be read by Mayor Craig Newton and photos taken with attending veterans. The public is invited to attend this historic meeting.

The Purple Heart is the medal awarded to all U.S. military members who have been wounded or killed in combat. Purple Heart cities and counties are part of the Purple Heart Trail, which “creates a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges and other monuments giving tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal.”

As a Purple Heart City, Norcross will observe Purple Heart Day each Aug. 7. Signs are currently being made by the Georgia Department of Transportation which will be placed at the entrance of city limits identifying Norcross as a Purple Heart City.
