Commuters headed south on Ga. 400 out of north Fulton and Forsyth counties had an extra lane to drive in Tuesday after authorities opened an auxiliary lane between Mansell and Holcomb Bridge roads.
The state Department of Transportation had planned to open the extra lane, which was originally designed to give merging and exiting motorists a lane of their own, last week, but inclement weather delayed the restriping of the roadway.
The conversion of a second stretch of auxiliary lane, from Haynes Bridge Road south to Mansell Road, is expected to be completed Tuesday night, in time to open that lane to traffic on Wednesday morning.
The changes are the second low-cost measure the state has taken to improve traffic flow on the north-south artery in recent weeks.
Last month, the DOT began allowing morning commuters to drive in the southbound shoulder lane for the five miles from Holcomb Bridge Road south to the North Springs MARTA station. Previously, police and transit buses had exclusive use of the shoulder lane.
Unlike the shoulder lane, the auxiliary lanes can be used at any time.
