Several families were displaced early Tuesday morning when a fire broke out at a northwest Atlanta apartment complex.

Atlanta fire crews were called to the Allen Hills Apartments at the intersection of Middleton Road and Allen Temple Court about 1:10 a.m. When they arrived, they found heavy fire at one of the units.

“The initial call came in as a possible stove on fire,” Atlanta fire Sgt. Cortez Stafford told AJC.com.

Firefighters helped a number of people to escape from the unit and those surrounding it, he said. Eight families, 23 people in total, were forced to evacuate.

No injuries were reported, Stafford said.

Red Cross was called to the scene about 3:45 a.m. to provide emotional support and “assistance for immediate emergency needs like lodging, food, clothing, toiletries, replacement medications and other essentials,” according to the organization.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is heavy damage to the apartment where it started, Stafford said, as well as water and smoke damage to the adjacent units.
