Twenty-six schools, including three in Forsyth and two in the Cobb and DeKalb county school systems, have been named 2011 Georgia Schools of Excellence for showing the greatest improvement or highest achievement, it was announced late Tuesday.

Each school will receive a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas, including these in metro Atlanta that were honored for making the greatest gains: Pine Street Elementary, Rockdale County; Clairemont Elementary, City Schools of Decatur; Sprayberry High and Hillgrove High, Cobb County; Level Creek Elementary, Gwinnett County; Heard-Mixon Elementary, Newton County; Settles Bridge Elementary, Forsyth County; and Stockbridge Elementary, Henry County.

Recognized for highest achievement are: Peeples Elementary, Fayette County; Oak Grove Elementary and Vanderlyn Elementary, DeKalb County; Morningside Elementary, Atlanta Public Schools; Shiloh Point Elementary and Vickery Creek Elementary, Forsyth County; and Holly Springs Elementary, Douglas County

"These schools are showing that excellence can be achieved when they focus on providing a world-class education for their students," State School Superintendent John Barge said.

The Georgia Schools of Excellence are chosen from each Congressional district and are honored in two categories based on math and reading tests: schools that are in the top 10 percent in Georgia; and schools that demonstrated greatest continuous gains in student achievement for the past three years.

“Having not just one, but two Cobb County high schools recognized for making academic gains is outstanding," said Cobb Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. "The School of Excellence awards reflect three years of hard work and sharp focus on student achievement by the teachers and administrators at Hillgrove and Sprayberry. We are very proud of these schools for earning this prestigious honor.”
