More than 600 people helped clean up downtown Atlanta on Tuesday, April 24 in observance of the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day. Individuals and teams from corporations, colleges and community groups -- along with federal, state and city agencies -- were invited to register for the first Downtown Atlanta Earth Day Cleanup Challenge. Participants picked up litter, planted trees and landscaped. "We must work every single day to conserve our precious natural resources," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who took part in the clean-up. "Everyone can play a part by cleaning up a park, turning off lights and conserving water."
