A Cobb County mother and her two young children were recovering Monday after being hit by a vehicle while trying to cross a Smyrna road this morning.
The incident happened about 7:45 a.m. when Lisa Stark of Smyrna was pushing a baby stroller across four-lane Concord Road at Hollis Street, according to Smyrna police and Channel 2 Action News.
The 25-year-old woman was trying to get to a bus stop with her youngsters, ages 5 years and 7 months, police said. She told investigators that she lost control of the 5-year-old, who ran into traffic ahead of her.
Stark and the children then were struck by a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe sport-utility vehicle drive by Lawren Butcher, 54, also of Smyrna, police said.
The driver of the Hyundai stopped after the incident, Channel 2 reported.
"It doesn't look like speed or DUI or anything like that was a factor from the driver's perspective," Smyrna police spokesman Michael Smith told Channel 2. Police subsequently said a preliminary investigation indicated speed was not a factor, and that this was a low-speed accident.
The closest crosswalk is at least a quarter-mile away, Channel 2 reported.
The children were taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Engleston, and Stark was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, police said.
Channel 2 reported that the mother suffered a broken ankle and was expected to be released from Wellstar Kennestone later Monday, and the children would likely be released from Children's Healthcare on Tuesday.
Police said they were investigating the accident and will determine later if charges are warranted.
