Milton residents launch historical society

Milton’s history long predates the city’s incorporation in 2006. For example, resident John B. Broadwell (1855-1953) was famous for having developed improved strains of cotton. A 1911 photo shows Broadwell on his wagon selling his cotton seed. MILTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Milton residents who voluntarily researched a city-funded historical marker program, with 27 markers installed, have announced the creation of a Milton Historical Society to “study and communicate Milton’s vibrant but little-known history.”

Milton is a young city, having incorporated and elected its first mayor and City Council in 2006. But the area and name were long associated with Milton County, created in 1857 and merged into Fulton County in 1932.

“The program acknowledges places and persons central to an understanding of Milton’s past,” said Bill Lusk, society chairman and former council member. “We seek to recognize aspects of our history that helped define who we are today. We hope additional citizens will join us in our efforts.”

The society plans to establish a History Room with research capabilities, and a repository for historic documents, photographs, artifacts and family histories, according to an announcement of the non-profit's creation. Information: Bill Lusk at miltonhistoricalsociety@gmail.com or 678-458-4208.
