Gov. Nathan Deal appointed another major backer to the State Board of Regents.

Neal Pruitt Jr., CEO of the health care company UHS-Pruitt Corp., will join the board. The 18-member group oversees the 35 public colleges in the University System of Georgia.

Pruitt, a member of Deal's transition team, donated to the governor's campaign. His family and company also contributed, according to campaign finance records.

He joins Philip Wilheit, another campaign donor, who Deal named to the regents in January.

Atlanta’s Public Works Department has failed to properly regulate the city’s streets, according to a report from the city auditor’s office. “The Department of Public Works lacks effective enforcement to ensure that construction work is inspected and the streets are adequately restored when construction is completed,” the audit said. The audit also stated, “Public Works has not ensured that the Department of Watershed Management’s utility street cut work is permitted or inspected according to the city’s right-of-way ordinance. Further, the department is not ensuring that franchised utilities comply with bond and insurance requirements. As a result, the city may be responsible for repairs of damages if cuts fail.” The audit said the city paid about $218,000 in 2010 to settle 193 claims of damages related to right-of-way activity, while collecting an average of $137,000 per year in construction and excavation permit revenue for the last three fiscal years.
