The Cherokee County school board offered an alternative at its Thursday meeting to advocates for charter schools in the county who say there should be more choice in public schools. The board, and superintendent Dr. Frank R. Petruzielo, proposed the creation of Cherokee Academies, would offer specialized educational programs within existing schools were space is available and stand-alone programs in "re-purposed" school facilities. Coweta County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service are hosting a SKYWARN Storm Spotter class at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. The class will be taught by a NWS meteorologist and is open to volunteers with an interest in public service, a responsibility for protecting others or access to a HAM radio or other communications systems. The Morehouse School of Medicine hosted an event Thursday devoted to personalized medicine – the new field of healthcare that incorporates a patient’s genetic information when making diagnosis and treatment decisions. Leading research Dr. Leroy Hood spoke at the event, where Gov. Nathan Deal also made remarks. Deal issued a proclamation making Sept, 1, 2011 the State of Georgia Personalized Medicine Awareness Day.
