The state House Committee on Assignments appointed new committee officers.

Rep. Carl Rogers, R-Gainesville, is the new chairman of the Higher Education Committee. Rep. Ann Purcell, R-Rincon, is the new chairman of the Public Safety Committee.

Rep. Penny Houston, R-Nashville, is the new vice chairman of of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Economic Development, and Rep. Katie Dempsey, R-Rome, is the new chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources.

Rep. Stephen Allison, R-Blairsville, is the new vice chairman of the Game, Fish and Parks Committee. Rep. Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, is the new chairman of the Human Relations and Aging Committee, and Rep. Billy Horne, R-Newnan, is the new vice chairman of the Small Business Development and Job Creation Committee. CHRISTOPHER QUINN

Despite a down economy, the Georgia SPCA completed more than 1,100 adoptions of homeless cats and dogs in 2011.  It was their best adoption year on record.

Executive Director Jane Stewart said most of the animals came from animal control facilities throughout our state, which had put them at high risk for euthanasia.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold its next volunteer orientation on Sunday at 5 p.m. at 1175 Highway 23/Buford Highway, Suite 109, Suwanee.
