The University System of Georgia is looking to expand distance education programs and created a new position to direct online learning. Jon Sizemore oversees these programs at Valdosta State University and will serve as interim assistant vice chancellor for distance education, system officials announced this week. Students can already take 3,525 courses online and the system's 35 colleges offer more than 210 online degree programs. LAURA DIAMOND

A Nobel Peace Prize winner is among those who will speak at Monday's economic conference organized by the University System of Georgia.  Muhammad Yunus won the prize in 2006 and has championed microcredit, providing small loans to those in poverty to spur entrepreneurship. College students will share their proposals to promote jobs and address other community issues. The event will be held at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech. More information: www.usg.edu. The Georgia chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation will host its annual fundraising walk event, Moving Day, on Oct. 22, at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.

The event, which starts at 8:30 a.m., will also include breakfast, yoga, dancing and other events. An estimated 55,000 Georgians are affected by Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a nervous system disorder that leads to tremors, difficulty with walking, movement and coordination. MISTY WILLIAMS
