A former medical school dean who served as chief executive officer for the Federation of State Medical Boards will be the interim president of the Medical College of Georgia, state officials announced Thursday.

James Thompson will join the Augusta college next month and will serve until a permanent president is on board, said Erroll B. Davis Jr, chancellor of the University System of Georgia.

The university system is conducting a national search to replace current president, Daniel Rahn, who is the new chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Rahn has said he would like to leave the Medical College by the end of October.

Thompson is a dean emeritus of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and currently lives in the Dallas area. He’s an otolaryngologist, a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases involving ears, nose and throat.
