Emily Lembeck, superintendent of Marietta City Schools, has been named state school superintendent of the year for Georgia. Lembeck has been the city system's superintendent since 2005.

About 20 superintendents had been nominated, and four were chosen as finalists: Lembeck; Forsyth County's Buster Evans, Hall County's Will Schofield and Banks County's Chris Erwin.

Lembeck served as associate superintendent for curriculum and operations for Marietta from 2001 until her appointment as superintendent. Under her direction, Marietta City Schools became one of the state's first charter school systems in 2008.
