The Marietta City Council split 4-3 Wednesday on agreeing to buy 28 acres of the Marquis Place Apartments at 1019 Franklin Road from Marquis Place Holding.

Opposed were Councilmen Grif Chalfant, Anthony Coleman and Philip Goldstein.

City officials are in the process of buying property along Franklin Road, relocating residents of those apartment complexes and demolishing the apartments — all in hopes of attracting high-quality businesses as has occurred with Home Depot.

“We have not purchased Marquis Place yet officially. We are under contract for $17.3 million, pending an inspection and a final council vote,” city spokeswoman Lindsey Wiles told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday.

In March, the Marietta Police Department ranked Marquis Place, with nearly 800 occupants, as having the highest crime rate among the city’s 45 apartment complexes.
