The Marietta City Council voted 4-3 Wednesday night to create the city’s first locally controlled historic district.

The Kennesaw Avenue Historic District will include 29 houses. Homeowners will have to seek permission from the city’s historic preservation commission to make exterior structural changes that are visible from the street.

The city has five neighborhoods on the national register of historic places, including Kennesaw Avenue, but being on the national register doesn't impose such restrictions.

Council members Philip Goldstein, Anthony Coleman and Annette Lewis voted against creating the district.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
