A man was killed Thursday night when he arrived home to find thieves burglarizing his southwest Atlanta house.
The victim was shot by at least three different guns, police said.
The shooting happened in the 1800 block of Evans Drive, Atlanta police Lt. Paul Guerrucci told the AJC.
Investigators found multiple bullet shell casings and one of the weapons at the scene, Guerrucci said early Friday. Police do not yet have anyone in custody, he said.
The shooting happened when the victim and his girlfriend returned home.
"It appears that there were perpetrators perhaps burglarizing the house and they were surprised by the occupants returning home, and then it escalated into the shooting," Guerrucci told Channel 2 Action News.
The girlfriend was hit on the head with a gun. She was treated on the scene by medical personnel but not taken to a hospital.
Police have not released the identity of the man or woman.
Police think the suspects may have left the scene in a white Chevy suburban.
