Randy Murray was convicted and sentenced to life in prison Friday for the Feb. 2007 shooting death of a 30 year old man.

Murray, 42, was charged with murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges after he shot Jerome Barnett in what lawyers believe was a botched drug deal.

According to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office, the incident took place on February 11, 2007 at the Efficiency Lodge Motel on Wendell Drive in South Fulton. Both men were living at the motel.

Layers believe Murray was attempting to buy marijuana from Barnett but was “short” a couple of dollars. Barnett refused to extend Murray credit. Murray pulled a gun and shot Barnett in the head.

A man living in a room below called police after hearing the gunshot and seeing a bullet come through his ceiling, said state officials. Another witness reported seeing Murray walking away from the room, wiping down a handgun and placing it in his pocket.

A few days later, Murray was arrested at the motel.

Murray is a three time convicted felon having recently served twelve years in prison for rape and aggravated sodomy in DeKalb County. He had been out of jail nine months before committing this crime.
