The 25-year-old man who died in a house fire intentionally set the blaze, Gwinnett County fire officials said Tuesday.
Kevin Haynes was the only person inside the Lawrenceville duplex, located on Curtis Road off Hurricane Shoals Road, when crews arrived shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett fire department.
Investigators found evidence indicating Haynes used gasoline to start the fire and did not try to escape, Rutledge said. Haynes died from smoke and soot inhalation, the Gwinnett County medical examiner said.
The fire appeared to have been set in a back room of the duplex and sent smoke and heat throughout the home, Rutledge said. Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the adjacent unit.
