A 37-year-old man was sentenced to life plus five years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his estranged wife in a mall parking lot, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. The crime was committed in front of the woman's teenage daughter.
James Barrow fatally shot 32-year-old Asa Barrow in the parking lot of Old National Discount Mall on Godby Road in College Park on Nov. 28, 2010 while she shopping with her 14-year-old daughter and the teen's father, Willie Lyles, officials said.
He confronted the group and pulled out a gun. After a security guard ordered him to drop his weapon, James Barrow shot Asa Barrow in the chest, then stood over her and shot her three more times before leaving the scene, authorities said.
He was arrested the next day after authorities found him hiding in a wooded area of his hometown of Lanett, Ala.
A month before the shooting, Asa Barrow had filed for divorce after five years of marriage. More than two weeks before her death, she also had taken out a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband after he vandalized her car and apartment, officials said.
James Barrow was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, cruelty to children and weapons charges in connection with Asa Barrow's death, authorities said.
